The Holy Spirit comes with His gifts to impact the life of a baptised Christian. He comes to dwell in us and enable us to live and participate in the divine nature of God. This is real and an awesome work of Jesus Christ. Romans 8 verse 14 says that as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

Purpose:

The Holy Spirit sustains the moral life of Christians through the His gifts. He makes them to become docile in following the promptings of the Holy Spirit in their lives (CCC 1830). The sanctifying gifts of Holy Spirit help recipients to grow in holiness and to be fit for Kingdom of God.

Gifts:

The gifts of the Holy Spirit, as mainly disclose in the Scripture (Isaiah 11:1-3) are Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety and Fear of God. These gifts, according to Aquinas, are ‘’habits,’’ ‘’instincts,’’ or ‘’dispositions’’ provided by God as supernatural helps to man in the process of his ‘’perfection,’’ enabling man to transcend the limitations of human reason and human nature and participate in the very life of God, as Christ promised (Source – www.catholic.com).

Manifestation of Spiritual Gifts:

The fullness of Holy Spirit in the life of a believer is never dormant but is made visible through a clear display of Spiritual (Charismatic) gifts. As Saint Paul disclosed it,

‘to each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit; to another mighty deeds (Miracle); to another prophecy; to another discernment od spirits; to another varieties of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit produce all these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes’’ (cf. 1 Cor.12:7-11).

All these gifts work together to make the Church, which is the body of Christ, radiate in glory and be strengthened in effective proclamation of the message of salvation in the world.
