The major thing the reception of the Eucharist in Holy Communion does is to unite the communicants with Jesus Christ; Eucharist knits us with Christ.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) 1391, Holy Communion augments our union with Christ. Its principal fruit is to bring about an intimate union with Christ Jesus.

Indeed, the Lord said: “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him” (John 6:56).

Life in Christ has its foundation in the Eucharistic banquet. This is affirmed in this words of Jesus Christ: “As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me” (John 6:57).
