Why Did Jesus Die Shamefully On The Cross?

The humiliation that Jesus Christ underwent during his passion and eventual death on the cross is really terrible. He was scourged, beaten, slapped, spit on, stripped, laughed at and use for jest! It was really demeaning. One has asked, ‘why didn’t he just get killed by sword, probably when He was praying at Gethsemane?’ or better thrown down from a high mountain? Why must he be hanged naked on the cross?
Shamefully though it was, but it is very necessary He die on a cross. Why?
1). To Bear The Shame of Our Sin:
After our first parent – Adam and Eve sinned – they realized they were naked; since then nakedness has been a sign of shame and dishonour. Jesus then came and died naked in order to put to end the disgraceful work of sin in man whom God created in His image and likeness, and to cloth man with His righteousness. ‘Surely He bore our griefs, and carried our sorrows…’ (Isaiah 53:4)

2). For Salvation Of The Souls Of Men.
He took the highest form of death possible in those days, in order to show the extent of His love toward men, even to the most hardened sinner. This is not far from what He said In Luke 19:10, when He was in Zacchaeus house, “For the Son of Man came to seek and save that which was lost”

3). To Make the Gentiles Partake in the Blessings of God:
Galatians 3:13-14 is much revealing. It reads, ‘Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law being made a curse for us: for it is written, cursed is every one that hangs on a tree: that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith’. Today, we enjoy the blessing of the Father because of Jesus’ death on the cross.

4). To Obey The Father To The Fullest:
Christ life is marked with true humility and full obedience to God. He knew his hour but he did not run away; He knew the will of the Father – that He must die naked on the cross – He did not reject it, rather he prayed, asking God to let His(Father’s) will be done. We have a lot to learn from Jesus Christ.

5). To Secure Eternal Life For Us:
Christ came that we might have life and have it to the full. In John 3:14-15, He did said, ‘ As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so shall the Son of man be lifted up, that whomsoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life’.

Christ loves us and showed it of the cross. May we show sincere love to others. Amen.
