Understanding The Love God Has For Us.

The LORD God has expressed His love for man in several ways. Through His words, thoughts, presence, assistance, deliverance and protection, He has always shown His affection to man.

First, during creation, He made man in His image (Gen 1:27). This is the first expression of Love: being created in the image of God. Man is thus not like Chimpanzees, Apes, Monkeys nor dog. No! Rather we took after God. Attesting to this awesome work of God, John the evangelist wrote, ‘As He is, so are we in this world’ (1 John 4:17).

When man sinned, God did not disown him entirely, rather He sought him whom He made, in order to cleanse him of sin, and to renew his spirit. In Genesis 3 verse 9, we heard Him calling the first man, Adam and asking, ‘Where are you?’ This showed how God loved Adam, making Him to seek for the man, instead of man seeking for God. When He found Adam, the Lord God made clothes of animal skins to cover Adam’s nakedness as well as his wife, Eve (Genesis 3:21).

In love, God kept watch over his people. When Israelites were held captive in Egypt, God showed them His love. Even in the midst of cruelty and brutality of Pharaohs soldiers, God strengthened them and increased their number. At the appointed time, God delivered them in most unbelievable manner even making a way for them through the Red sea. Alleluia.

In love, God cared for man, giving him right principles and rules which will guide His life. He never ceased to speak to His people through the mouth of His Kings, Priests and Prophets. King David while deliberating on this said, ‘Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path’ (Psalm 119:105).

In love, God promised to be with His people always. ‘I will not leave you nor forsake you,’ is His words. He told Moses, ‘My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest’ (Exodus 33:14). When Jacob cried, ‘I will never let you go, unless you bless me,’ He changed his name to ‘Israel’ thus forming a nation from a person and gave him favour in the sight of his brother, Esau.  Hear His words to His people In Isaiah 43:1-3,

‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you work through the fire, you shall not burn, nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour…’

In Love, He redeemed man from damnation and sin. Through Jesus Christ, he gave man salvation and fullness of life. Speaking to Nichodemus on this, Jesus said, ‘For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life’ (John 3:16). He reconciled us to Himself and revealed Himself as the ‘Heavenly Father.’ He gave us His spirit – the Holy Spirit, and promised everlasting life to them that will obey Him. Alleluia.

God is love and His love has no end. May we live in this love, and show the same love to one another. Amen.
