Text: Matthew 11 v 28

Introduction

The Bible text for today’s message began with an invitation “Come unto me”. This statement can also imply that you are far, hence, the invitation. It is worthwhile to note that Jesus was extending this invitation to all those who are overburdened.

This invitation is addressed, not to a selected individual, but to all that are burdened with one problem or the other. His call to all is a pointer to the fact that Jesus has the capacity to attend to as many as they that would come to him.

A number of us are facing a whole lot of challenges from the family, our offices, our finances to our daily sustenance. All these challenges burden us to the point of weariness. The greatest of these burdens is the burden of sin that consistently weigh us down. Perhaps, we have been doing all we can to overcome to no avail. It is in the face of this helplessness that Jesus is inviting us, “Come to me”.

He that has called us to Himself has all it takes to lift all our burdens.

Jesus’ capacity to help us

He wants to give us life to the fullest; one that is unencumbered by life’s burdens (John 10:10).

He is our true vine. In Him lies our sufficiency. Without Him we can do nothing (John 15:5).

As many as they that go to him will never lack (John 6:35).

In Him we will find peace, even in the midst of the challenges and persecution that abound in the world (John 16:33).

On the flip side, the abundace of our worldly possession can also be a burden unto us, as was the case of the rich young man. To this same category of persons, He is also extending this invitation. This invitation is a call to a life of detachment.

For some of us, the bane of our problems is our distance from Jesus. And today Jesus is saying, come to me and I will give you rest. Jesus gives us here the best offer any man can give, and that is “rest”.

5 Things in the rest that Jesus offers

1. Peace (Matthew 8:23-27)
Some of us are currently going through the storms of life. However, if we come to Jesus, he will give us that rest that will calm all our storm.

2. Favour (Luke 5:4)
Some of us have toiled for years with nothing to show for it. It is not our efforts, but God’s favour, that makes a difference in the life of a man.

3. True success (1 Timothy 4:15)

4. Assurance of the presence of God (Exodus 13:14)

5. Assurance of eternal life
