‘The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel.’ Mark 1:15

Repentance means turning away from sin and turning totally to God. It is the showing of remorse and regret for wrongs done to God and fellow human beings,  and resolving to live rightly and never to sin. Sin is an offence against God; against reason, truth and right conscience (CCC 1849, 1850).

Repentance does not suddenly happen; a times it is preceded by certain experiences – some painful – which make a soul to return and seek after God.

What Can Make Someone To Repent?

Personal Realization:

‘I have sinned, what is evil in your sight I have done’ (Psalm 51:4). These remorseful words of King David  come to show us that repentance supposed to be triggered off  when a sinner recognizes how shameful and wicked his or her actions were. This should  then make him or her to yearn for forgiveness.

Suffering For A Long Time:

‘I will arise and go back to my father’ (Luke 15:18). Suffering atimes comes to draw one close to God. The prodigal son could not have repented if he still had much money at his disposal. It was famine and its cousin, hunger that dealt painful blows to the young man. The suffering later became harsh and unending that the run away son began to think about the goodies in his father’s  house. Repent and return back to your heavenly father. He will forgive you and take care of your life.

Enjoying Special Favour:

‘Every good thing comes from above, from the Father of light…’ (James 1:17).  God has a way of drawing souls to Himself. And one of them is through showering a soul with His special blessing. It can be in form of victory, deliverance, honour, success or fruitfulness. These good things ought to make one realise the goodness of God towards him, and in return, resolve to live according to the words of this God who gives the blessings.

Personal Encounter With God:

‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me’ (Acts 9:4).  But for the timely intervention of Christ in the life of Saul, the young man  would have caused much  havoc in the lives of early believers. However, that encounter changed Saul’s life and mission forever; his eyes were opened to the true riches of the gospel which made him became the ‘minister of the gospel of Christ.’ Never forget or take for granted occasions when God visits you or speaks to you personally.

Hearing The Message Of Salvation:

‘Faith comes by hearing, and hearing the word of God’ (Romans 1:17). The gospel of Christ is the power of God that leads to salvation. The word of God comes to inspire, correct, reproof and guide souls of men in righteousness. As we have opportunity to hear God’s words, let us repent and live righteously.
