Control Your Tongue!

It is very necessary for believers to watch over what they say. In our today’s world, where freedom of speech is upheld, everybody is clamoring to let his or her voice be heard.  While it is good to speak up and be heard, as Christians, we must be careful how we speak, and ensure that what we say are true. Below are four scriptural verses that lend credence to the above subject matter.

1). Proverb 10:19 – ‘The more you talk, the more likely you are to sin. If you are wise, you will keep quiet’

The simple admonition here is to be careful what you say. If you have nothing to say, just keep mute. If you keep saying everything that crosses you mind, you may later realize that some of what you have said are untrue. Then, you be called a ‘Liar’.

2). Matthew 12:36 –  ‘I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account of it in the Day of Judgment.’

Idle words are foolish, empty, evil and unprofitable words, spoken mostly to make jest of sacred things. In the context where it was used in the bible, Jesus was addressing the Pharisees who accused Him of casting devils by Beelzebub, the prince of the devils. Do not speak what you are not sure of. If you want to get full fact about any matter, the proper thing to do is to carry out detailed investigation.

3). James 1:26 – ‘Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep tight rein on their tongues deceives themselves, and their religion is worthless’

You religion is also in danger if you do not bridle your mouth. Christ spoke the truth; and when He has nothing to say, He kept silent. He has given us an example to follow. That does not mean we should not express our minds, we should; but in doing that, we must be careful not to voice things that are in themselves false and offensive.

4). James 3:2 – ‘For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body’

Do you want to be a perfect man or woman? Begin to exercise control over your mouth. What you say matters. This starts from the heart. You need to control your thoughts. The scripture says, ‘out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.’ No wonder God cautioned us in Proverb 4:23 to guard our hearts diligently because from it comes the issues of life.

Have you been found wanting in any of these? The profitable thing to do is repent and begin to control what you say. God loves you and will always assist you to live a perfect life.
