Text: Gal 5:16

Minister: Bro Onukwube Paschal

Temperament is created with both weaknesses and strengths. The message focuses on understanding how the Holy Spirit will help us overcome our weaknesses. This overcoming is not automatic, but when attained, it helps us have a lasting communion with the Holy Spirit.

Romans 7: 18-20, St. Paul lamented about his weakness. The good things he wishes to do, ends up being the opposite. It was his sin that caused this.

There is no man without a temperament. Scholars often attribute this to genetic inheritance. Every temperament has its strengths and weaknesses.

Psalm 139:13 – Man is fearfully and wonderfully made. Showing that there is strength in every man.

Temperament is called several things in the scriptures. It is called the natural man, the flesh, the old man, and the corruptible flesh. At the end, the Bible says it is the impulse of our being that seems to satisfy our wants.

It is the combination of our inborn traits that subconsciously controls our being. Your character is the real you, the Bible regards it as a hidden person of the heart. Whatever you see yourself doing is your hidden man and it is a result of your temperament. Character combines your temperament, training, moral values, and belief systems/patterns. This is what makes a man. That is why God looks at the heart and not the facial expression (1 Samuel 16:7), the issues of life flow from the heart (Proverbs 4:23).

The Spirit of God interacts with our temperament offering a pathway to spiritual growth. The Holy Spirit guides individuals to live a Christlike life and manifests godly character. This brings lasting change to a man. Galatians 5:16 says we should walk by the Spirit and we shall not satisfy the lusts of the flesh.

The Holy Spirit when invited into a man, transforms the person’s character and changes his weaknesses into strengths. The work of the Holy Spirit is to renew and transform us daily. The fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galarians 5:22-23) is given to replace those weaknesses in our temperament.

While temperament can present challenges, it can also be a tool for strength. When we yield to the Spirit of God, these weaknesses can be a tool for God. There is nothing that God cannot do. Scripturally, there are men that God changed their temperaments and transformed them fully (Moses, Saul)

Four Temperaments

Choleric, melancholy, phlegmatic, sanguine

Melancholy are prone to negativity but the Holy Spirit can offer strength

Sanguine can struggle with commitment but the Holy Spirit can give them ability to remain steadfast.

The goal of this message is not to eliminate the temperaments which are inherent in us but to allow the Holy Spirit to take over. This process involves a conscious effort to allow one aligns his will with that of the Holy Spirit. What this means is that you are involved in the process.

Each weakness in us has a positive replacement (Galatians 5:22-23), this verse is a highlight of the replacement. When your thoughts and actions have been aligned with those of the Holy Spirit, that is when “Romans 12:1-2” can be said to have happened to us. Without the Holy Spirit domiciled in us, one cannot distinguish between you and the world. But the presence of the Holy Spirit makes the difference.

Galatians 5:16 is a command and centers on working with the Holy Spirit. We must submit daily to the leadership of the Holy Spirit; aside from this, we can do nothing (John 15:5). He enables us to act, speak, think, and respond to many things.
